Teacher: Mrs Jan West

Classroom Teacher …My name is Jan West and this is my tenth year teaching at “The Best in the Bay”. I live at Albany Creek and am married with three children. Other than teaching and my family, my favourite things are reading, basketball and coffee with friends.

Our Philosophy…In our class, we have class members from a wide variety of different cultures so we can celebrate and show respect for our differences. We get our work done to the best of our ability, are committed to attractive art work, put effort into physical activities and enjoy a little relaxation with free-time. our class is a democratic class where a vote is always taken to make a decision. We are supportive of all worthwhile causes.

Our Routine …In our class, the class members in turn, take responsibility for the daily jobs. This is always done with diligence and pride. Literacy and Numeracy are done daily. We are regularly involved with Science, SOSE, Technology, Arts (including Music) and H.P.E and Smart Moves. Once a week we have library borrowing, Cultural Studies, visit our Buddy Class – Prep/1 M and Religion. An exciting part of the week is Friday afternoon when class members either play Interschool Soccer or Basketball or are participants in school activities. Mrs West is the coach of the four basketball teams.

Our Resources and Support …We are fortunate to be supported through our weekly program with Ms Kingsbury – Teacher Librarian, Mrs Wilkes – Teacher Aide, Mr Alexander – P.E., Ms Grayson – Learning Support. The staff at “The Best in the Bay” are extremely supportive of all students.

Our Units of Work …

Term 1 We Are One But We Are Many – is a unit to celebrate our individual differences, while being proud Australians.

Term 2 Eat or Be Eaten – is a science based unit that builds knowledge and respect for our Australian animals and plants in our diverse environments.
